Samara turns four!

One of my favorite things about family photography is being witness to kids growing up. I first worked with Samara and her mom in 2009, and have since done four sessions with her. I’ve blogged about this before, but it never ceases to amaze me to watch these babies become kids with opinions and developing personalities.

I asked Sam’s mom to stand with her in front of her, and hold onto her fingers, like she did for a session we did in 2009, and 2010, and blogged about here. Once she did, the tears came quickly, as she had a flash back to those moments, remembering just how tiny her little girl had been, and how fast she is growing up.

It’s What You’re Willing to Carry With You

I get two questions a lot:
1. What camera should I buy to take good pictures?
2. You mean to tell me you don’t bring your camera on vacation?!

In answer to number one, it’s not about the camera. Not to say that a high quality camera and lens selection aren’t important. Of course they are. But the fundamentals of photography are housed in the ever expanding instincts and knowledge of the photographer. Buying the $7,979.99 bike that Lance Armstrong rode to win the Tour de France may make riding a little easier, but I ain’t winning the Tour on it. One of my photography teachers here in DC, Zaid Hamid, at the time used just a 50mm lens and a camera about three iterations older than mine. And mine was the least sophisticated of everyone’s. And he could still shoot circles around all of us.

The best camera is the one you’re willing to carry with you. The heavy Nikon D3 with a 400mm lens ain’t gonna take very good pictures on my vacation because it’s sitting in the closet at home. Shlepping a monster like that through the airport as my carry-on and treating it with the love and attention of a newborn baby is not my idea of kicking off a relaxing week away.

Which brings me to question number two. There are instances when I bring my camera body and a few select lenses on vacation. Back in a 2010 trip to Europe, I brought my camera body, an 85mm 1.8 lens for portraits and street scenes, and a 14 – 24mm 2.8 lens for landscapes. I thought about what types of images I wanted to take from that trip, and packed the bag accordingly.

But sometimes, I just want to sit on a beach chair and read from my Kindle. I don’t want to think about getting up at 5am for the best light, or missing dinner for the perfect twilight shot. So on these types of vacations, the only camera I am willing to bring with me is my iPhone. Which I did on last weeks’ trip to Antigua, West Indies.

Where, ironically, it was 15 degrees cooler than here in DC.

Cara and Joe – Hotel Monaco | Washington, DC Wedding Photographer

I first met Cara and Joe last year, to discuss wedding coverage for their July 2011 date. Immediately I could see the love between the two of them, and their relaxed joy in discussing their big day.

So when I walked into Cara’s suite at the ever spectacular Hotel Monaco DC on Saturday morning, and found her relaxed, gorgeous and ready to go, I wasn’t the least bit surprised. She showed me the gorgeous vintage earrings that Joe had gifted her that morning. He also found a pitch-perfect hair piece, made by an artist on Etsy who re-purposes broaches. I love how he could match her dress so perfectly, without even having seen it.

A QUICK trip to the Lincoln before the ceremony. We got stuck in serious Constitution traffic so had about 5 minutes to grab some shots down on the mall. Luckily, Joe and Cara are gorgeous, so it wasn’t too hard. I did this little vintage treatment to compliment the timelessness of her dress and his suit.
The gorgeous ceremony. Such a beautiful space at the Hotel Monaco! I love how they’ve situated all of the chairs and bridal party to create a circle around the couple.

In my opinion, this recessional picture is in the top three favorites that I’ve ever taken:
The following were taken after the ceremony was over…they were so relaxed and excited to have the rest of the night to celebrate!

I showed this image and a few others to Cara and Joe as we were walking back to their reception, and she said “is that us??!! it looks like a magazine!” which indeed, they do look like they just stepped out of.
The ceremony area, converted for the reception…

Their sweet first dance. They had the best songs EVER for their first dance, as well as the parent dances. Joe’s really into music, so Cara also had a “music poster” made for him for their wedding that features the date, location and their names, all in rock style font and layout.

An outrageously fun reception followed the big event and capped off a perfect day.

Many, many congratulations Joe and Cara! Have a wonderful time on your honeymoon!

Apple Seed and Us

Have you ever been to the adorable Old Town, Alexandria maternity and infant boutique, Apple Seed? From the unique props to the hand-distressed furniture throughout the store, the owners have created a beautiful space that fits the needs of parents to be.

This year, Stacey Vaeth Photography was invited to do an installation for their walls. Each piece is adorned by our new vintage frames. We’re so excited!

And the best part, if you swing by Apple Seed and mention that you heard about them from Stacey Vaeth Photography (and since you’ll have to say it out loud – it’s vaeth – pronounced like “Faith” but with a V) :), they’ll give you 15% off of one item!

Happy shopping!
Stacey

Keigan and Kate

Keigan and Kate were so much fun to work with at their engagement session! A true southern girl, Kate even brought out the cowgirl boots for part of the shoot. Kate’s a videographer, so really understands visual impact, and therefore came with a look that matched what they told me they wanted out of their session. We had met beforehand, which is really helpful in this process. They expressed the whimsy and vintage look that they are crafting for their outdoor wedding. And they showed me the most unique thing I have seen in a while, an adorable Save the Date video, starring them, and created by Kate. Congratulations you two! Thanks for sharing your joy…

Happy Summer!

I hope that everyone had a wonderful weekend celebrating the 4th of July. My husband, brother and I went down to North Carolina to spend the weekend with my family. Two days of sun, great food, and great conversation does a person right. And watching the fireworks with one of my closest friends, since we met at age 7, well, it was just an awesome weekend.

In celebration of a joyful and colorful summer, here are a few photos of my friends’ son, cutie that he is.

His little puckered face, on the brink of a cry, was as a result of me taking his cracker away. His grandmother, when relayed the story, said “Now why would she do that to him??!!” Mean photographer that I am replied “Anything for a picture”.

Just kidding.

The Mansion at Strathmore, as always, provided a spectacular venue for the reception. I love the gardens, outdoor patios, and historical interior. So picturesque.
And not to mention that the staff is top notch.

Photography

This morning I was at the offices of the American Association of University Women, with whom I’ve worked for a few years. But today was different. Instead of the usual headshots and special events I’ve done at the office, this week is their national conference. And for a portion of it, we toured their offices. I’ve walked these halls many times before, but never really stopped to look at the plethora of artwork and photographs that they contain. They own an original Georgia O’Keefe sketch. They have letters from Roosevelt. A trunk, that in 1881 was the “AAUW office”.  I can only imagine the documents and research that it held.

But most breathtaking were the photographs framed and hung throughout the halls. Photos of suffragists protesting, and a particularly incredible frame of a woman, fierce and determined, being arrested. Photos of the first presidents of the organization, receptions, candid shots of members, and the entire organization standing in front of the White House with the first lady. And it reminded me that what I do is sometimes pretty important. That the photos I took this morning will continue to create a documented history of AAUW and the members and staff that drive it.

When I created Stacey Vaeth Photography, I drafted a vision statement to crystallize what I wanted to do. Part of it says:

“I will capture what may feel like an every day moment. But the image of that moment, hung on the wall over the years, can speak volumes and change meaning each day. If successful, it can exude the complexity of a lifetime, the profoundness of a rite of passage, and the meaning of a family through an expression of love, peace, growth and comfort.

The deck of card-sized camera of today has transitioned photography from a novelty to an ever-present activity. As a result, professional photography and the physical photographs that result are even more special. Images that tell a story, are classically framed and passed through generations create permanency in this fast paced and impatient world.”

Last week I photographed Noah, now a “big boy”.
I shot him first when he was a few months old:
And then a few months after that…
And then at a Cherry Blossom Mini, and lastly, this past week…

A large print from each of these sessions hangs on the walls of Noah’s house, and I can’t help but imagine how he’ll laugh, seeing himself as “little” kid, as he grows up over the years. A sweet honor it is to be a photographer. Indeed.

Mary Caroline and Kate

What sweeties! I have had the pleasure of working with Mary Caroline and her mom in the past, and got to visit them again a few days ago to welcome Kate! Just 16 days old, and the kids are getting along so well. Precious.
