Class Picture Day

Whoa have I ever been out of touch! I’ve been shooting every day, morning and evening, for the last several weeks. With impending Hurricane Sandy, I have a few moments to gather my work and post a bit. Unfortunately, with our power most likely to go out tomorrow, my unplanned few days without a shoot won’t allow me to catch up on image procession!

So, here we go with just a few shoots from the last few weeks.

These are a few selects from a fundraiser I did with the Beverly Hills Preschool in Virginia. Say goodbye to your standard class pictures! So much fun to work with these little cuties, and for such a great cause.

Ella and Jimmy – Year Three – Virginia Family Photographer

I’ve been working with Jen and Myke for four years now. In fact, they were some of my first clients, participating in a mini session when Jen was seven months pregnant with little Jimmy. I then did Jimmy’s newborn session, where we began to build a collection of wall art for the family. Jen’s very good about printing pieces that the family and guests will enjoy every day.
We unintentionally began a tradition at Jimmy’s newborn session, where I took this image (and the image in the frame above them, from their maternity session):
In each session, we’ve repeated the shots on the bed, as the family has grown.
 Then along came Ella Rose:
I can’t adequately express how privileged I feel to capture these images for this family. To know that they’re hanging on the walls of their home and becoming family heirlooms….well, that’s what this job is all about. They printed the above image in my Heritage Line style, a giclee print with a hand deckled edge, and float mounted and framed in an archival museum frame. It hangs side by side with a shot of Jimmy from his one year session, also from the Heritage Line. If you’ve been to my studio, you’ve undoubtedly seen it.
So, it was so much fun to do the fall family session for these guys this past week! A few favorites (it gets harder to narrow down the more you work with a family, the more they know me, and the more great images we get).
The post would not be complete without this series: Boys will be boys!

From Jimmy’s one year session:
Two years later, at the same spot (and yes, he did this all himself – no prompting! A good little subject ๐Ÿ™‚
And a little fun under the covers and pillows – where the kids were “comfy and cozy”!
From Jimmy’s first year session:

And this year….
This is one of the walls that we’ve begun to design. I’ll take some better images as we continue to build this and the wall adjacent to it, aka Ella’s Wall.
Myke, Jen, Jimmy and Ella, it’s absolutely my great joy to work with you year after year!

Apple Seed Shoot – Old Town Alexandria Family and Kids Photographer

If you haven’t been to Apple Seed Maternity and Baby Boutique in Old Town, Alexandria – get yourself there! It’s a gorgeous little shop, run by two mothers (one of which is momma to this gorgeous little girl) who really know their stuff. When I was there hanging a print installation on their walls, I heard Dina chatting with all of the customers that came in, expertly guiding them through the unknown world of maternity and infant wears.
I had the pleasure of working with Dina’s family for this shoot last week….Old Town, and her little girl, could not be more photogenic!

Dahlia Coco – Washington, D.C. Family Photography

Good friends Laura and Phillip brought their baby girl, Dahlia Coco, down to Rock Creek Park for a fun end of summer photo shoot. Laura and I taught yoga together at Past Tense Yoga Studio in Mt. Pleasant, and it’s been such a blessing to see her life grow full with the addition of little Dahlia. It was such a fun, cool morning…and a great kick-off to a full and spirited fall.

Colette and Kevin, Georgetown Portrait Session, Washington, D.C.

Colette and Kevin were married five years ago this past weekend, so hired me to do an anniversary portrait session. An idea I love, by the way. We headed to Georgetown in the late afternoon heat, and everyone hung in there, with periodic breaks to cool down. When we reached the water feature by the waterfront, it was all we could do to not join the little kids running through the sprinklers.
They were just gorgeous to shoot, and a lot of fun to spend the afternoon with. I LOVE what they chose to wear, a balance of classic pieces with pops of color. Just perfect. Happy anniversary you two, to many more!

Mark and Josh’s Wedding – JW Marriott and The Source, Washington, DC

Josh and Mark are an amazing couple. Their quiet admiration and love of each other is apparent at first glance. Their humility and kindness is what makes them cherished friends to many. And their obscene talent at creating both gorgeous and delicious things is off the charts.
Josh is a baker, and I was first introduced to him in the kitchen at Buzz Bakery. He was the company’s baker, and whipped up some of the most amazing creations. Photographing his treats (the apple pie photo, for those of you who have been following this blog for some time), was, indeed, a treat for me.
But before long, I got to know Josh as a friend, and am so lucky to have done so. He gives freely of himself, supporting everyone around him in their endeavors. I met Mark a bit later, and it was apparent to me from the very start that he’s the perfect partner for Josh.
Needless to say, it was such a pleasure to be asked to photograph their wedding at JW Marriott here in Washington, DC. An intimate celebration with fewer than 25 guests, the wedding was full of perfect details and infused with spirit. After being driven indoors (into the hotel suite!) by the wild storms on Saturday night, it was quickly apparent that an already intimate plan was going to become more so. And was it ever. All of the guests could hear the vows clearly, see the couple easily, and were truly witnesses to this monumental step. Many congratulations Mark and Josh, it was a perfect day.
Mark talks with his hands.
XO cufflinks for Josh.
Traditional type-set cufflinks for Mark. M and I, his initials.
Mark’s niece, the precious flowergirl, and his brother.
The flower girl was having NONE of walking down the aisle. She instantly picked up her legs and dad had to walk her down the aisle. It certainly added charm to the ceremony.
My favorite picture from the ceremony.
The original ceremony location – post rains!
My favorite picture from the day.
Josh was most excited about the table at The Source, a Wolfgang Puck restaurant.
The guests said that the meal was unbelievably good.
Flowers by the always amazing Petal’s Edge.
The broach on the cake is Mark’s grandmother’s. She couldn’t attend the wedding, so was there in spirit.
Venue: JW Marriott, Washington, DC
Reception Venue: The Source
Flowers: Petals Edge
Cake: Kendall Barrett

Samara in the Morning – Georgetown Waterfront, Washington, D.C. Family Photographer

Sam just turned five. Five years old, off to kindergarden, and becoming a girl with ideas, loves, likes, dislikes and lots and lots of words. Jolina, her mom, said to me, “It so fun these days! But sometimes, we’re talking, and the endless questions just lead us down a rabbit hole. And before long, I’m thinking ‘how did we get here?'”
I love this vision of endless chatter and discovery, because when I first met Samara, she was one. And very shy. Every year, I get to meet her a little more, see her real personality come out. On this gorgeous morning at the Georgetown waterfront, we did our annual photos. And had a ball. Check out this link for a trip down memory lane with Jolina and Sam: http://staceyvaethphotography.blogspot.com/2011/08/samara-turns-four.html

Posed or Photojournalistic?

Yesterday a client and I were talking about style. Photographic styles have changed so much in the last few decades, that everyone seems to have a different expectation of what a successful picture will look like. Often, within the same family, one person will want a formal shot, others envision something candid.

It’s such a personal thing. Some of my favorite photos from my childhood are the least scripted ones. I guess that’s why I shoot the way I do. When I look at a photo, I want to feel what it was like in the moment, rather than just see it .Yet, often in the more candid moments, we don’t look our best (or maybe we do, but someone doesn’t!).

And now there is this trend of styling shoots, which has updated the classic studio shot to something more unique and artistic. Yet your baby never actually spent time in a pumpkin, now did they (not knockin’ the brilliant Anne Geddes, but, you know)? All I know is that I am so happy to be a part of this vibrant, evolving world of creating personal art for the everyday. It’s a great gig. I kind of can’t believe that I get to spend my days thinking about these things. Great gig, indeed.

So, what’s your favorite type of image? Is it in a studio, with everyone looking at the camera and perfectly posed? Is it laughing in a park, or on your couch, capturing an everyday moment with your family?

How i Got the Following Photos
Placed subjects in the right spot and light and let them do their thing. In fact, I think Rachel was holding her infant Helene in this spot first, while Rowan was off collecting flowers. The baby started crying, so Russ took her out of the shot, and Rowan brought his mom a little yellow bloom.

Placed subjects in the right spot to take advantage of that gorgeous rim light, and put Danielle up on a few steps, since Peter is 6’4″. Let them do their thing.

Same steps, seated, facing the other direction for more fill on their faces, posed.
Posed. I don’t know, doesn’t every baby look adorable in a basket?

Posed little Catherine.

Posed.
Certainly not posed. Little Ella Rose giving the stare-down to Jen ๐Ÿ™‚ She was a little sleepy this day.
Not posed. John actually holds his daughters this way…in the most perfect “Dad” grip….and Catherine actually had her hands like that.
Put Sam in the spot that I wanted, and she struck her lovely look all on her own.
 A little happier Ella Rose.

 Posed on a white backdrop.

Posed. For three frames. Then the twins were off and running for the rest of the shoot!

Window Light

This is a really bad scan of my one of my favorite wedding photos from my wedding (see, this was way back when before digital). Eleven years ago, Juan and I married on Canandaguia Lake, NY in a small afternoon celebration.
I am looking out of the window at Juan and his brother, standing along the lake edge, waiting for the guests to be seated.
I remember looking out of the window, and feeling that gorgeous window light streaming in. I knew would love this shot, so just sort of waited there for way longer than what would be considered a normal glance out the window :), until my photographer saw it too and took this picture.
As I’ve been teaching these photo classes over the last few weeks, I’ve begun to remember how powerful just basic light sources are. Just a simple window can tell the entire story when it’s used right.
